New LGA Flight & TEX Jet Service Highlight Winter Air Schedule

Plus ORD Running Through the Fall with DEN and DFW

TELLURIDE, Colorado (August 23, 2019) – With summer winding down, Gold Season is just around the corner, and Telluride’s winter air schedule is live with a few notable changes for 2019-20.

For fall/Gold Season, the Telluride-Montrose Airport (MTJ) will have three flights running daily through to winter, including Denver (DEN), Dallas-Ft. Worth (DFW) and Chicago (ORD). This is the first fall that ORD will run daily through October and November. Daily flights will also continue into the Telluride (TEX) Airport from DEN on Denver Air Connection until October 15 and Boutique Air until October 31.

Winter flight changes are led by the addition of New York/LaGuardia (LGA) flights on Saturdays on American Airlines. American will also be increasing their ORD-MTJ flights to daily in February and March, and running a mainline jet on DFW-MTJ flights with a 27% increase in capacity. The LGA flights will take the place of American’s previous Charlotte (CLT)-MTJ service.

“Additional nonstop service into the New York metro, one of the world’s largest ski markets and a top market for Telluride, will continue to increase ease of access for our eastern guests,” said Colorado Flights CEO Matt Skinner. ““With 15 nonstop flights from 11 national hubs, the Montrose-Telluride region ranks among the best in mountain destinations for air access.

United’s main addition is the expansion of ORD flights through fall to winter, with that service on the verge of going daily, year-round. New York (EWR)-MTJ flights will also run daily again during the holiday season and in February and March after a successful start last year.

Delta will be adding a day to Atlanta (ATL)-MTJ service, now running four days-a-week during the core season, taking steps towards daily winter service.

“Expanded winter and fall service to Montrose combined with continued direct jet service to Telluride is a significant enhancement for our region and visitors,” said Lloyd Arnold, Director of Aviation at Montrose Regional Airport. “In early December our customers will see terminal improvements and additional amenities to support that increase, , including an added departure gate and curbside check-in.”

The Telluride Airport will feature the recently launched Denver Air Connection flights this winter, operated on a 30-seat Dornier Jet with a United Airlines interline relationship. Boutique Air will not operate at TEX during the winter months. Flight capacity at TEX will increase by more than 60% for the winter season.

The 2019-20 winter season will see an overall increase in air service of approximately 13% into the two airports serving the destination. MTJ & TEX now feature 15 nonstop flights from 11 major hubs, including seven daily nonstop flights from six major hubs.

Great Lakes Suspends Operations

TEX Flights Cancelled, Overall Air Access to Telluride Largely Unaffected

TELLURIDE, Colorado (March 27, 2018) – Great Lakes Airlines announced yesterday that it has suspended its commercial airline operations, resulting in the cancellation of flights to Telluride Airport (TEX). Overall air service to Telluride and the region is largely unaffected as the Great Lakes flights comprised less than 3% of the air access this winter.

The destination is served by two airports, with the bulk of flights coming into the Telluride-Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), Telluride’s primary airport. Air service into MTJ continues to run at record levels, offering more than 350,000 seats in and out annually from 12 national hubs on 4 major carriers.

Great Lakes officials have cited the national pilot shortage as the core contributing factor for recent struggles to provide air service and for the suspension of operations.

Colorado Flights is working with its partners to assist customers who are currently booked with Great Lakes. According to Great Lakes’ instructions, customers seeking refunds should call 800.554.5111, or visit the airline’s website at www.greatlakesav.com. Customers are encouraged to rebook on the multiple flight options into the Telluride/Montrose (MTJ) airport, and to call the Telluride Tourism Office at 866.829.6852 for shuttle assistance.

“We appreciate Great Lakes significant efforts over the past several years to maintain service into the Telluride Airport (TEX) in the face of an acute pilot shortage, caused by a change in federal regulations in 2013,” said Colorado Flights COO Matt Skinner. “While our core air access through the Telluride-Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ) remains unaffected, we will continue to work on options for commercial service into the Telluride Airport.”

Building since the 2013 regulation change, the pilot shortage now reaches from local and regional carriers up to mainline legacy airlines, affecting routes and air service to communities throughout the country.

Access to the Telluride/Montrose region from around the country improves with added and extended service, larger aircraft and more available seats than in years past.

United partner Great Lakes Airlines will continue to serve the Telluride (TEX) airport from DEN with 10 flights per week, as well as adding a route between Phoenix (PHX) & TEX twice-per-week on Mondays and Thursdays – a great opportunity for Phoenicians to escape the heat.

The service from DFW continues to operate daily year-round. American also continues its daily service from Phoenix (PHX) and weekly from ORD into MTJ through September 4.

“Summer air service is expanding at a fantastic rate, adding more and more options for both incoming visitors, area residents and businesses looking to travel,” said Matt Skinner, Chief Operating Officer for Colorado Flights. “We look to continue to do our part in creating economic sustainability and growth for Western Colorado, targeting service to/from key markets and additional year-round flights.”

Overall, summer air service is projected to grow 11% in 2018, with a 37% increase over the last two years and 54% over the last three. United’s IAH flight will increase by 52% with the larger aircraft, and the ORD flight by 158% with the extension of service. American’s larger planes and two Saturday flights increase the service from DFW this summer by 36%.

“Easy access through the growth in air capacity to our destination continues to provide travelers from across the country an opportunity to experience our world-renowned alpine lifestyle,” said Michael Martelon, Chief Executive Officer of the Telluride Tourism Board. “Colorado Flights Alliance continues to deliver on economic potential to the entire western slope.”

Telluride Continues to Add Winter Flights

Telluride Continues to Add Winter Flights

Ranks Among Best in Mountain Airports with 15 Non-Stop Flights

TELLURIDE, Colorado (September 7, 2017) – Telluride will once again see a jump in air service for the 2017-18 winter season, continuing to add flight options and ranking among the best in mountain resorts for access.

Telluride is adding yet another hub to its list of direct flights with Charlotte (CLT) service to Telluride/Montrose Airport (MTJ) on American Airlines. Charlotte, American’s second largest hub, provides great connectivity for eastern and international travelers to easily access Telluride. Flights from CLT to MTJ will run Saturdays from Dec. 23, 2017 through March 31, 2018.

As American continues to push forward in leaps for the Telluride region, Dallas (DFW) will see an added second daily flight over Thanksgiving and third daily flight over the Christmas/New Year’s holidays, complementing daily mainline jet service and twice-daily flights through the bulk of the season. American flights from Phoenix-Sky Harbor (PHX) will continue to run daily through the winter, along with service from Chicago (ORD) and Los Angeles (LAX).

Delta Airlines will operate new flights this winter from Salt Lake City (SLC) to MTJ over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. This service provides excellent access for those traveling from the west, as well as Delta’s eastern hubs, and is a precursor to adding a possible season-long route next year. Delta will continue to fly three times a week from Atlanta (ATL) to MTJ as well.

Core-carrier United Airlines will run an additional daily Denver (DEN)-MTJ flight, bringing that total to 4-6 per day through the season. United will also continue to operate daily flights from Houston (IAH) and Chicago (ORD), along with 1-3 flights weekly from New York’s La Guardia (LGA), Newark (EWR), Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO).

Telluride is still reveling in the return of commercial flights to Telluride Airport (TEX), just 10 minutes from town and the ski area. TEX will continue to see daily service throughout the year from Denver (DEN) on United partner Great Lakes Airlines, averaging 10 flights per week.

Low-cost carrier Allegiant will continue service into MTJ from Los Angeles (LAX) twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

“Telluride continues to lead the charge for air accessibility in the ski industry,” said Colorado Flights COO Matt Skinner. “We rank among the best in mountain airports for direct flight options, and are one of the few to have major network connectivity, a low cost carrier and flights that land just 10 minutes from the slopes. Both our guests and locals alike will enjoy the multiple options with easy access to and from domestic and international destinations.”

For the two airports serving the destination, Telluride (TEX) and Montrose (MTJ), the added service brings the total to 15 non-stop flights (16 over the holiday season) from 12 major hubs for the 2017-18 winter. This is as good, or better, than every mountain airport in North America. In comparison to other ski destinations around the country:

o   ASE: 10 hubs, 13 nonstop flights

o   JAC: 12 hubs, 15 nonstop flights

o   EGE: 14 hubs, 15 nonstop flights

o   HDN: 14 hubs, 15 nonstop flights (2 of each on regional carrier)

“The direct economic impact of added flights is invaluable to the region,” said Michael Martelon, CEO of the Telluride Tourism Board. “Air service is a driver that delivers to all areas of the regional economy.”

This 2017-18 winter season will see an overall increase in air service to the Telluride region of approximately 5%, with a 43% increase over the last three years.
